At first glance, you might say, nothing in life is free. Well that’s sort of true. If you are looking for an inexpensive (and typically FREE) way into your local comic convention, look no further!
Yes you heard that right, completely free admission! Well, it is contingent on your willingness to volunteer. You see, each show comes with great volunteer needs. Each show has a massive undertaking to unload, setup, install, watch the entrances/exits, watch the ticket counter, help transport guests to and from the convention, website needs, marketing needs, promotional needs, tend to guests at the show, run errands, pick up essentials, make a store or food run, etc.
And each show always can use more volunteers! Generally the application process is a breeze and they will generally take your help if you are offering.
What do you get in return? Well free admission for the weekend (typically) for starters. You will generally have a few hours a day of responsibilities and then a few hours a day to enjoy the show. Also, they will usually equip you with a comic convention/volunteer t-shirt and sometimes additional swag as well.
Wow, cool, sign me up! Just watch for your local conventions social media feeds or browse their websites. You will eventually see a post that is calling for volunteers or a page on their website with the information you are looking for. And even if you don’t see any posts calling for volunteers, it never hurts to contact the show promoters or website team to see if they could use some extra help. And if, for some reason, the show doesn’t have volunteer opportunities, you can always team up with a local artist/writer/vendor that will be exhibiting at the show. They may have an extra pass for the weekend and be very grateful for the hand!
