DESCRIPTION:1988. Microsoft releases Windows 2.1. Bruce Wills becomes an action hero with the release of Die Hard. Bobby McFerrin tells everyone\, “”Don’t Worry\, Be Happy.”” And in the Twin Cities\, a group of comic book fans decide to have a comic book convention. \nIt was a relatively small\, local show. There weren’t a lot of frills or ‘extras.’ Just comic dealers\, comic creators\, and comic fans. A stripped-down\, old-school\, four-on-the-floor\, dual-overhead cam comic convention. And just like a quarter-mile run in a classic muscle car\, it was fast\, exciting\, and a lot of FUN. \nEnough fun that they decided to not just do it again\, but to add a second show! And\, contrary to every other major comic convention in the country\, we still maintain two conventions every year.

DESCRIPTION:Tidewater Comicon is the brainchild of founder Mike Federali who wanted to see a local comic book convention become a reality so bad he sold his entire comic book collection at garage sales\, flea markets (and even on AMC’s Comic Book Men) to make the show possible. The first show was a one day hotel show with an over capacity crowd. Fans gathered\, met creators\, had a blast\, and left with only one complaint.. More Space! \nThanks to the yard sales\, fundraisers\, Tidewater Comicon moved to the Virginia Beach Convention Center where it has continued to grow each year in space and attendance. DESCRIPTION:What Is VanCAF? \nVanCAF is The Vancouver Comic Arts Festival. It is a two-day celebration of comics and graphic novels and their creators\, including an exhibition and vendor fair featuring hundreds of creators from around the world. Other Festival events include readings\, panels and workshops. Since 2012\, VanCAF has been held at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre in Vancouver\, British Columbia. \nThe 2018 edition of the Vancouver Comic Arts Festival will take place Saturday\, May 19 and Sunday\, May 20 at the Roundhouse\, 181 Roundhouse Mews. \nAdmission is free. \nInformation on the specific creators\, events and exhibitions that will make up next year’s VanCAF will be posted on this website as we get closer to the event! \n  \nHistory \nThe Vancouver Comic Arts Festival is a two-day celebration of comics that enjoyed its launch in May 2012. The festival features readings\, panels\, and workshops\, alongside an exhibition for cartoonists from across the country and down the coast. \nVanCAF is meant for everyone\, whether they’re comic professionals\, die-hard fans\, or casual readers. For this reason\, admission to all events is completely free\, and participating fees for exhibitors are kept as low as possible. The festival seeks to support Vancouver comics\, encouraging local creators and stories. \nThe show has enjoyed a growing audience since 2012\, attracting 3\,200 attendees with 92 exhibitors in its first year. In May 2017\, we boasted an astonishing 10\,300 attendees\, and 260+ exhibitors\, spanning across two halls. \nThe Vancouver Comic Arts Festival is managed and organized by the Vancouver Comic Arts Association\, a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting local cartoonists with the community. Her newest work is Alienation\, published by Fantagraphics and debuting at TCAF 2019! Inés Estrada attends TCAF this year as a Featured Guest of the Wowee Zonk Pavilion\, celebrating 10th Anniversary of Wowee Zonk at TCAF! \nBill Griffith: Creator of the syndicated daily comic strip Zippy The Pinhead\, Griffith’s prolific output has been included in such publications as the Village Voice\, National Lampoon\, and the New Yorker. According to Bartlett\, Griffith coined the popular phrase “Are we having fun yet?” He lives in Hadlyme\, Connecticut. Bill Griffith attends TCAF in support of his new graphic novel\, Nobody’s Fool: The Life and Times of Schlitzie The Pinhead\, published by Abrams ComicArts. \nGord Hill: The author of The 500 Years of Resistance Comic Book\, The Anti-Capitalist Resistance Comic Book\, and The Antifa Comic Book. He is a member of theKwakwaka’wakw nation whose territory is located on northern Vancouver Island and adjacent mainland in the province of “British Columbia.” He has been involved in Indigenous people’s and anti-globalization movements since 1990. Gord Hill attends TCAF in support of The Antifa Comic Book\, published by Arsenal Pulp Press. \n \nLucy Knisley: The author and illustrator of beloved graphic novels about memory\, identity\, food\, and family\, Knisley is the New York Times bestselling author of Relish: My Life in the Kitchen and Something New. She lives and works in Chicago\, with her husband and child. Knisley is attending TCAF in support of her debuting graphic novel Kid Gloves from First Second. \nAnders Nilsen: The author of eight books including the phenomenal Big Questions\, Nilsen’s work has been featured in the New York Times\, Kramer’s Ergot\, and Pitchfork\, among many others. Nilsen makes his home in Portland\, Oregon\, and will attend TCAF in support of his ongoing self-published comic book series Tongues. \nBrian Selznik: The New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of The Invention of Hugo Cabret and Wonderstruck\, among many other beloved books for children. Selznik attends TCAF in support of his first book for adults\, the TCAF-debuting “provocative visual narrative” Live Oak\, With Moss\, published by Abrams ComicArts. Based on the original poetry by Walt Whitman and reconstructed by Karen Karbiener. \n \nSeth: Seth is the cartoonist behind the comic book series Palookaville\, which continues to this day as a semi-annual hardcover from publisher Drawn & Quarterly. His comics and illustrations have appeared in the New York Times Magazine\, Best American Comics\, New Yorker\, the Walrus\, and Seth also illustrated TCAF’s very first Festival poster in 2003. Seth will attend TCAF in support of Clyde Fans\, his epic graphic novel over a decade in the making. \nVivek Shraya & Ness Lee: Vivek Shraya is the multi-award-winning author of works including God Loves Hair\, even this page is white\, I’m Afraid of Men\, and What I Love About Being QUEER. Shraya has teamed with prestigious Toronto illustrator/artist Ness Lee to release the disturbing Death Threat\, an unflinching portrayal of violent harassment and the dangers of online hate\, published by Arsenal Pulp Press. Shraya and Lee will attend TCAF in support of Death Threat’sspring 2019 debut. \n\nMark Alan Stamaty: Acclaimed American cartoonist and illustrator\, Stamaty has produced numerous children’s books but is best known for his syndicated comic strip MacDoodle St. Stamaty attends TCAF in support of a remastered collection of MacDoodle St. published by New York Review Comics. Mark Stamaty will only be present at TCAF on Saturday\, May 11. \nMore guests are soon to be announced\, including International Guests\, Young Adult Guests\, and Kids Guests. We welcomed Chuck Norris\, Finn Jones\, Anthony Mackie\, Jon Bernthal\, Mike Colter\, Felicia Day\, Pom Klementieff\, and so many more celebrity guests.
